Why everyone should solo

The other night I took my paladin out of Orgrimmar for the first time in quite a while.  In the second half of Wrath I had taken what was previously my bank alt, a Blood Elf Paladin and made him my main.  This provided me with a new look at the game as I had previously only played ranged DPS in Vanilla through Burning Crusade.  Due to a combination of a wave of nerfs early on in cataclysm and me getting absolutely addicted to playing my enhancement shaman my former main became my jewelcrafting alt.

With the changes to a more interactive tanking style, something that I argue Paladins had at the beginning of Cataclysm but was taken away for PVP balance and later given to Blood Death knights; I have started itching to tank again.  The funny thing about how I approach the tanking role in World of Warcraft is I take keeping my party alive very seriously.  It plays off my responsibility strength.  When I am playing DPS it ties into my achiever strength.  consequently I stress a bit when I am not at the top of my game, even though a wipe in a dungeon is really a small event in the larger scheme of things.   (reference: Strengths Finder)

To get my tanking “mojo” back I decided I need to run some solo dungeons.  Soloing dungeons was a mainstay of entertainment for on my Hunter in Vanilla and the Burning Crusade as I was not always able to make myself available when the guild was running dungeons.  Though I did get into a number of 10 may scholomance runs back before it was a 5 man.  Soloing dungeons that you outlevel and outgear can be a good way to warm up your skills and help you rebuild muscle memory.

If you are new to soloing dungeons I would start with something you seriously outgear and see how gonzo you can be and still live.  Such as pulling all of a low level dungeon at once and seeing how well you can handle dishing out DPS and using cool downs.  I believe all classes now have some sort of survivability cooldown via their talent choices.
I would then suggest moving up to classic or Burning crusade Raids.  To get into most of them you will need a second character to form the group.  follow the instructions i outlined in my article on why it is beneficial to have two accounts or have a friend/guildie help you out by joining the party while they are hanging out in Orgrimmar showing off their latest transmogrification styles.

One of the  favorite raids I would suggest are Molten Core from Classic world of warcraft as it is incredibly epic and can be soloed by several, possibly all classes.  This was originally a 40 man raid which is why there is a fair amount of trash, but more importantly the corridors are wide enough you can skips whatever trash you want to avoid fairly easily.  The boss fights are fun, the dances had not gotten to the complexity that we now experience so it can be easily completed by one player.  Prior to the 5.0.4 patch this raid was also a good source of quick gold for those who wanted a more dynamic way of making money in game.  The amount of gold that the older raids and dungeons are dropping has been reduced in the latest patch.

My next favorite is Karazhan.  This is a great dungeon with varied fights, incredible ambiance and awesome drops for building your transmogrification sets.  The best looking gear is Bind on account so I suggest taking in who you want to suit up.   The first boss is very popular due to the small chance of it being able to drop Fiery Warhorse's Reins.   A word of warning for DPS characters soloing this first boss, if you kill the horse before the rider is spawned reset the dungeon as you won't be able to get the reins.  Thank you to Shade on All things Azeroth for that tip.

Once you have progressed beyond this level and are still feeling the need for a challenge I would start walking into the starting dungeons from the wrath launch.  It is very satisfying being able to solo Corla, Herald of Twilight in Blackrock Caverns after having several groups wipe on this boss in the first weeks of cataclysm.

Soloing may not be for everyone, but I do strongly encourage everyone to give it a shot as you can adjust the challenge to the level you want by just moving up or down their the required level of the dungeon.

Good luck soloing.  Bon Courage!
